Desk hutches are utilitarian furniture but do not have to look like one. A coat of paint shows the wrong, wrong or repairs written to the focal point of a room – or even a closet. The chef, kid and telecommuter will enjoy some color therapy in their serious work rooms. A boring garage sales desk becomes a kitchen command center with a little paint. Sand finish to grind it so new paint will hold. For a distressed look, rub a little candle along the edges and corners to protect these areas from paint.
A medium or dark color desk hutches receives one layer of primer and two even coats of sea foam, pale turquoise or butter cream blank paint everywhere but the top of the desk. When the paint is completely dried, grind the edges and corners with fine-grade sandpaper to remove wax and reveal the old paint underneath. With two coats of faded gray blackboard paint, the desktop becomes a built-in doodle pad for grocery lists and recipes.

Small people need desk hutches to keep all their important projects and papers organized. Hunting in church thrift sales and used furniture stores for a small, solidly made desk on the legs that can be cut down. A period of reproduction or narrow roll-top comes with character already built. After grinding the piece, paint it an oil crayon color for high energy.
